“Are you sure it’s okay that I came with you to this party?” Fiona’s nose scrunched up as she asked the question.
It was cute when she got all nervous, but also annoying. For some reason we’d been together for three days and she had yet to learn to trust me implicitly. “Yes, of course. It’s open to the public. We just commandeered a few tables.”
After the incident in the café I decided Fiona needed to get out and release some energy — have fun with friends. I hadn’t figured out what to do about the twerp she thought was following her around, but I knew if I saw him again, it would be the last time I’d see him. Nobody was allowed to make Fi scared. Even her father had a history of keeping his daughter’s situation under wraps. I’d never let anyone dismiss her again.
I’d always had a lot of friends. College had been a great time for me to branch out and meet whole new groups of people, but I didn’t feel I’d expanded my family until I started working at Hunky Helpers. I don’t know how Tina did it, but she took a ragtag team of men with egos larger than her building and somehow made us all like each other. A true miracle.
Maybe it was that we saw a little bit of each other in ourselves, or maybe it was we appreciated what it took to stay in elite physical shape. Whatever it was, it worked. Earlier in the day we’d agreed to meet up at an after-work party to watch one of the Letty’s drag queen friends, Holly Danger on stage.
“What exactly happens at a drag queen show?” Fi asked, clutching my fingers as I held open the glass door to the club we’d be partying at tonight.
I hoped they sold a lot of liquor because I hadn’t been to one either, but Letty promised it would be good. She guaranteed Holly Danger was the up-and-coming drag queen on the Strip. There was a waiting list to buy tickets for any of the shows she starred in and apparently it’s quite a spectacle.
Tina told us to spend the evening bonding and if possible learn a few new moves. Not that my routine needed any help. My body and I were a fine-oiled machine.
“I’m unsure,” I answered Fiona and then opened a second door leading to the club area where they had the music turned up to maximum levels. “But it’s going to be loud,” I yelled over the noise the best I could.
Her eyes widened, and she shook her head twice. I sure hoped Fiona would be able to make it for an evening surrounded with drag queens and hunky helpers.
“Over there, it’s Sawyer from Hunky Helpers. We’ll find seats by him.” I tugged Fiona along the way with me doing my best to shimmy in between tightly packed tables full of people shouting their conversations over the blasting music.
